"교차하는 흐름들: 조지아 사회 비디오 아트의 변화"라는 제목의 세미나는 1990년대 초부터 현재까지 조지아의 비디오 및 미디어 아트의 전개를 개괄할 예정입니다.
분쟁 연구를 전문으로 하는 사회학자이자 정치학자인 말카즈 살다제의 강연을 시작으로 각 시대와 세대를 대표하는 조지아 예술가들의 비디오 작품이 상영됩니다.

기오르기 스판데라시빌리 - 교차하는 흐름들: 조지아 사회와 비디오 아트의 변화
기오르기 스판데라시빌리는 비디오/무빙 이미지와 미디어 아트 전반의 진화에 초점을 맞춰 조지아 시각 예술의 맥락에 대해 개괄할 예정이다. 비디오라는 매체는 1990년대 초 소련 정권의 붕괴와 조지아의 독립과 함께 등장하기 시작했으며, 변화하는 사회 및 정치적 흐름들을 반영하였다.
이번 세미나는 현재 한국 조지 메이슨 대학교에서 강의하고 있는 말카즈 살다제 박사의 초청 강연으로 시작한다. 분쟁 연구를 전문으로 하는 사회학자이자 정치학자인 말카즈는 1990년대 초부터 현재에 이르기까지 조지아 사회 발전의 역학 관계를 조망할 예정이다.
강연 후에는 조지아 비디오 아카이브에서 엄선한 조지아 예술가들의 비디오 작품을 상영하여 조지아 비디오 아트의 다양한 스펙트럼을 보여주고자 한다. 각기 다른 발전 단계와 세대를 대표하는 예술가들의 작품을 세 부분으로 나누어 상영한다.
기오르기 스판데라시빌리(1988년생)는 조지아에서 활동하는 독립 큐레이터이자 아트 매니저, 문화 전문가이다. 현재 국립현대미술관 창동레지던시 입주 연구자로서 한국 비디오 및 뉴미디어 아트의 발전 궤적에 대해 연구하고 있다.
기오르기는 조지아의 비디오 아트 아카이브인 "비디오. 이미지"(2014)와 융복합 뉴미디어 아트 플랫폼인 "인-비트인 컨디션즈"(2018)의 창시자 중 한 명이다. 2022년 제59회 베니스비엔날레 조지아관 큐레이터였다. 2013년부터 트빌리시에서 열리는 현대무용 페스티벌을 기획하고 있다. 국내외의 다양한 문화 플랫폼 및 페스티벌에서 일하고 협업하였으며, 그 중에는 트빌리시 현대미술센터(CCA)에서의 작업도 있다.
2010년부터 2016년까지 두 차례의 트빌리시 트리엔날레(2012, 2015), SOU-현대음악&비주얼 아트 페스티벌(2016, 2017), TKESHI-뉴미디어 아트&다이버스티 뮤직 페스티벌(2023) 등을 기획했다. 문화경영학 학사와 심리인류학 석사 학위를 받았다.
2017년부터는 큐레이터 업무에 집중하고 있으며 미디어 아트와 다학제적 관점에 중점을 두고 여러 대규모 공연, 축제, 공공 프로그램을 기획했다. 또한 트빌리시 주립예술아카데미에서 컨설팅과 강의를 제공하는 등 조지아의 공공 문화 정책 문제에도 적극적으로 참여하고 있다. 특히 조지아 트빌리시가 미디어 예술의 도시로, 쿠타이시가 문학의 도시로 각각 유네스코 창의도시로 지정되는 과정을 성공적으로 진행했다.
말카즈 살다제는 조지메이슨대학교의 '평화 및 분쟁 해결을 위한 지미 앤 로잘린 카터 스쿨'에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 또한 워싱턴잭슨 국제대학원에서 러시아, 동유럽 및 중앙아시아 연구로 석사 학위를 받았다. 그의 연구는 조지아의 역사 서술과 갈등의 변천에 초점을 맞추고 관련 문제에 대한 사회 문화적, 젠더적 관점을 다루고 있다.

MMCA Residency Seminar 02
MMCA is holding a seminar presented by Giorgi Spanderashvili, one of the research fellows of the International Researcher Residency Program 2024 . The seminar, titled "Crossing Currents: The Shifts in Society and Video Art in Georgia," will explore the evolution of video and media art in Georgia from the early 1990s to the present. The session includes a lecture by guest speaker Dr. Malkhaz Saldadze, who will discuss social development dynamics in Georgia during this period. Following the talks, there will be a screening of curated video works by Georgian artists. The event will conclude with an interactive Q&A session.

Giorgi Spanderashvili - Crossing Currents: The Shifts in society and video art in Georgia
Giorgi Spanderashvili will present an overview of the context of visual art in Georgia, focusing on the evolution of video/moving image and media art in general. The medium of video began to emerge in the early 1990s, simultaneously with the collapse of the Soviet regime and the restoration of independence to the state, reflecting the shifting social and political currents.
The session will also include a talk by guest speaker Dr. Malkhaz Saldadze, currently teaching at George Mason University Korea. As a sociologist and political scientist specializing in conflict studies, Malkhaz's presentation will explore the dynamics of social development in Georgia from the 1990s to the present day, spanning the period from the early 1990s to the contemporary context.
The talks will be followed by a screening of curated selection video works of the Georgian artists from the archive, showcasing the diverse spectrum of Georgian video art, divided into the three parts, each representing different phases of development and the generation of the artists. The event will be concluded with an interactive Q & A session.
Giorgi Spanderashvili (b. 1988) is a Georgia-based freelance curator, art manager, and cultural professional. He is currently a researcher in residency at MMCA, focusing on the development trajectories of Korean video and new media art.
Giorgi is one of the founders of the Georgian video art archive, Video.Image (2014), and the transdisciplinary new media art platform, "In-between Conditions" (2018). In 2022, he curated the Georgian National Pavilion at the 59th Venice International Exhibition - Biennale Arte 2022. Since 2013, he has also been managing the Contemporary Dance Festival in Tbilisi. His professional background includes working with and collaborating for various cultural platforms and festivals both locally and internationally. Among them are the Center of Contemporary Art, Tbilisi (CCA) from 2010 to 2016; two editions of the Tbilisi Triennial (2012, 2015); SOU - Contemporary Music & Visual Art Festival (2016, 2017); and TKESHI - New Media Art & Diverse Music Festival (2023), among others. He holds a BA in Culture Management and an MA in Psychological Anthropology. Since 2017, Giorgi has been focusing on his curatorial practice and has curated several large-scale shows, festivals, and public programs with a focus on media arts and cross-disciplinary perspectives. Additionally, He is actively engaged in public cultural policy matters in Georgia, providing consulting and teaching at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. Giorgi successfully facilitated the process of UNESCO Creative City Designations for two cities in Georgia: Tbilisi as a City of Media Arts and Kutaisi as a City of Literature.
Malkhaz Saldadze earned his Ph.D. from George Mason University's Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution. He also received an MA in Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies from the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. His Ph.D. research is focused on the narration of history and the transformation of conflicts in Georgia and engages with social-cultural and gender perspectives on relevant issues.
