«문신(文信): 우주를 향하여» 전시연계교육
난해한 현대미술을 마주했을 때, 작품에 대한 최소한의 정보라도 얻고자 제목을 살펴본 경험이 있지 않나요?
제목은 작품에 대한 나침반 역할을 합니다. 관객은 제목을 통해 작가가 ‘무엇’을 그렸는지, 혹은 ‘왜’ 작품을 만들었는지에 대한 힌트를 얻을 수 있습니다.
반대로 작품 제목이 ‘무제’인 경우는 어떤가요? 제목 없음의 ‘무제’는 작가가 제시한 단서 없이 관람자 스스로 작품을 음미하게 합니다.
관객은 자신의 힘으로 고민하고 자신만의 발견을 통해 작품을 감상할 수 있습니다.
실제로 작가 문신은 관객이 다양하게 추상하고 상상할 수 있도록 ‘무제’라는 명제를 즐겨 사용했습니다.
그리고 이런 작가의 추상조각은 관람자에게 상상의 여지를 남깁니다.

Education Program for Moon Shin Retrospective: Towards the Universe
Have you ever felt lost in front of artworks and thus directed your eyes to the title nearby to get an information?
Titles usually act as a compass helping audiences to interpret artworks. They give hints about ‘what’ an artwork represents or expresses, or ‘why’ an artist makes it.
On the contrary, how about a work of art which has no title? A title 'Untitled' encourages audiences to take an effort to get to know a work of art and enables their active concerns. It allows viewers to make their own discoveries without preconception. Artist Moon Shin enjoyed using a title 'Untitled' so that audiences could make their own discoveries without getting information from texts.
